Sharon Stone Saw the Light: The Near-Death Experience That Rewrote Her Fear of Dying

In September 2001 the actress Sharon Stone suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, and the bleeding into her brain went on for nine days. Doctors put her chance of survival at roughly one percent. It was there, on that edge — not at a seminar or a retreat — that she went through what she calls one of the most profound events of her life. It happened to her against her will, and that has to be said plainly. But what she describes is a state of consciousness whose doorway can also be opened deliberately, with no brush with death at all.

What she described

Stone is strikingly concrete about it. “I saw and felt myself being pulled upward into this incredibly bright white. But white doesn’t exactly explain it,” she says. The light, in her words, was “brighter than anything we’ve ever experienced, like moving directly into something bright as the sun, but not yellow.” And at the top of it she was met by the dead: “friends of mine, dear ones who had passed, and particularly dear ones who I had aided in their passing… were peeking at me through the top of this light, and smiling at me, and welcoming me.” It ended abruptly: “All of a sudden I felt like I’d been kicked in the chest by a mule… I expect they must have defibrillated me.”

Why this is a state of mind, not mysticism

Let’s name it honestly: this happened to Stone involuntarily, in the middle of a catastrophic physical crisis. It was not a trained practice, and it would be dishonest to dress it up as one. Yet the cluster of features she reports is familiar far outside the emergency room: a sense of separating from the body, movement upward through light, an awareness that feels wider and calmer than usual. People report very similar experiences at the edge of sleep and in states of controlled out-of-body experience — with no mortal danger involved. The doorway Stone fell through by accident is one consciousness has in ordinary life too.

What stayed with her afterward

The strongest part isn’t the light — it’s what the light changed. “It’s so profound,” Stone says of the experience; asked whether it was scientific or spiritual, she answers, “I’m with (Albert) Einstein, who believed that it’s both.” She set it all down in her 2021 memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice. The core shift was a lost fear of death and a calm sense of continued existence. That same change — fear dissolving, a re-evaluation of the self — is reported again and again by people who work with their own states of consciousness on purpose, rather than after a disaster.

The same door can be opened on purpose

Here is the key point: you don’t have to be in the one percent who survive to glimpse what lies past that threshold. What Stone went through in the ICU resembles, in its features, what is trained as lucid dreaming and controlled out-of-body experience. The direct route into it from waking is the WILD technique: you keep a thin thread of awareness while the body falls asleep, and you often pass through the same sensations of separation and light — safely and by choice. Behind the “mysticism” sits well-documented neurophysiology of the borderland brain states that also produce lucidity, mappable on the brain’s wave patterns.

How to reach it without a crisis — step by step

Begin with recall: keep a dream journal and write down everything the moment you wake. By day, run reality checks, and before sleep practise MILD so that awareness, not just imagery, follows you across the threshold. A separate skill is holding and stabilising the state once you are through the door. And if fear of death or anxiety sits underneath this for you, remember that conscious dream work is also used therapeutically — for instance in reworking nightmares and trauma.

How to walk this path with guidance

Sharon Stone reached the far side of that threshold at the cost of a near-death — and came back without fear. You don’t have to pay that price: the same door can be approached on purpose, calmly and gradually. If you want to walk this path with guidance, explore my method and apply.
